Our Story

Beckert Seed & Bulb Company was founded in 1877 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For decades, Beckert was the trusted source for quality seeds and bulbs across western Pennsylvania and beyond. Our brand, "Aristocratic Seeds," represented the highest standards of seed quality, selection, and service.

After nearly a century dormant, we're reviving Beckert with the same commitment to heritage, quality, and education that made it legendary.

Who We Are

We are a small team dedicated to:

  • Restoring heritage seeds β€” Preserving heirloom and open-pollinated varieties from historical Beckert catalogs
  • Digitizing history β€” Using advanced restoration techniques to bring our 1922–1959 catalogs to life
  • Publishing knowledge β€” Creating beautiful, practical gardening guides for modern growers
  • Supporting education β€” Partnering with K-12 programs to inspire the next generation of gardeners
  • Building community β€” Connecting gardeners, seed savers, and heritage plant enthusiasts

Our Values

Heritage

We honor the legacy of Beckert and the gardeners who came before. Our vintage catalogs aren't just historical artifactsβ€”they're practical, beautiful guides to growing uncommon varieties and learning gardening wisdom that's stood the test of time.

Quality

Every seed matters. We source from trusted heritage seed companies and preserve open-pollinated, non-GMO varieties that can be saved and replanted year after year.

Sustainability

Heirloom varieties support biodiversity. By growing and sharing open-pollinated seeds, we help gardeners become self-sufficient and protect our food heritage.

Accessibility

Great seeds and gardening knowledge shouldn't be expensive or hard to find. We're committed to making heritage gardening available to everyone, regardless of experience level or zip code.

The Beckert Archives

We've digitally restored over 79 vintage Beckert seed catalogs spanning from 1922 to 1959. These catalogs are:

  • Searchable β€” Find varieties, growing advice, and prices from any year
  • Beautifully restored β€” Hand-restored using advanced AI colorization to bring original artwork to life
  • Freely available β€” Preserved for growers, historians, and gardeners everywhere

Each catalog captures a moment in time: wartime seed rationing, post-war optimism, new varieties, forgotten heirlooms, and the voice of Beckert's original gardeners.

Why Now?

Gardeners today are rediscovering the value of heritage seeds. There's renewed interest in:

  • Food security β€” Growing your own food with varieties you can save
  • Biodiversity β€” Protecting plant heritage against corporate consolidation
  • Beauty β€” Heirloom varieties often outshine modern hybrids in flavor, color, and character
  • Connection β€” The joy of planting seeds that gardeners have grown for generations

We're excited to be part of this movement and to bring Beckert back into the hands of gardeners who care.
